Which Enneagram Types Tend to Lie More Often?

Honesty and trust are two of the most important characteristics of a good relationship, whether it is a professional or romantic relationship or simply a friendship. Although the Enneagram types at their best are great, most of us are not balanced and healthy all of the time and knowing who to trust can be vital for modern survival.

Liar Liar…

Although each Enneagram type has their weak points, it is important to note that lying is a choice that can be made by anyone. It is a feature of deceitfulness that reflects badly on the person lying, and often has selfish motives. Because of this, lying is something that will be seen in an unbalanced or stressed individual, no matter what their type.

Having said this – we have all lied in our lives and for some it is a little bit easier than for others. These types can make great liars:

Type 9 – The Peacemaker. At their best, nines are accepting, trusting, and stable and can be creative, optimistic and supportive. On their weak side, they will do almost anything to keep the peace and to avoid conflict, so they can be complacent, oversimplifying problems and minimizing anything upsetting. Because they are inherently good natured, most people will not suspect them of lying, making them ideal liar-liar candidates.

Type 8 – The Challenger. Eights are self-confident, strong, and assertive with ego-centric and domineering tendencies. They have a basic desire to protect themselves and be in control of their lives and will most likely lie to do so. They have a need to control people and can be  confrontational and intimidating. This makes them liar-liar candidate number two.

Type 5 – The Investigator. At their best, fives are alert, insightful, and curious – often developing complex ideas and skills in their head. Unfortunately they can become preoccupied with their thoughts, ideas and imagination resulting in a detached and high-strung individual. They have an innate desire to be capable and competent, and will lie to prove it.

Who makes the worst liars?

On the other hand, some types simply do not have the ability to lie convincingly – even though they may have tried. These types should rather opt for honesty as opposed to getting caught every time...

Type 1 – The Reformer. Ones are driven by a deep moral code and are conscientious, ethical crusaders with a strong sense of right and wrong. Even though they are inherently afraid of making mistakes, and may attempt to lie in dire straits – they are terrible at it.

Type 4 – The Individualist. Fours tend to be very self-aware and sensitive. They have an honest view of themselves and a basic desire to be different and unique. Although they may struggle with  self-indulgence and self-pity, they are not that concerned with what others think, and probably will not even bother lying.

Type 7 – The Enthusiast. Sevens are extroverted and optimistic at their best with a playful side.  As an entertainer, they may twist the truth a little or leave out details for the purpose of fun, but truly fabricating untruths is something they are not good at.
